Many of the gardens were all that you would expect of the Chelsea Flower Show. Garden design, combined with horticulture, both at the peak of their game, creating amazing spaces, that were totally stunning. But in the same way as haute couture is seldom practical or comfortable for every day wear, I couldn't envisage having many of the gardens displayed at Chelsea, transplanted outside my back door. It was on that basis I chose my 'Best in Show; Chelsea 2008'. The garden I selected was a garden that appealed to my senses, and my ascetic, it was designed for people with frailty, and would enhance the quality of their lives, and I would be more than happy to take it home with me, fully sure that such a garden would enhance my life and be a perfect sanctuary.

The Garden is destined for one of Bupa's London Care Homes, The Meadbank Nursing Centre, in Battersea. Cleve West won a Gold for this, but wasn't awarded best in Show, that went to Tom Stuart-Smith's Laurent Perrier Garden. Each year, the BBC run a seperate award known as the 'Peoples Award' which I know the designers regard highly as public affirmation and recognition of their achievement. I shall most definitely vote for the Cleve West's Bupa Garden in the 'Peoples Award' and you can vote for your favourite Chelsea 2008 garden here too.

Below, I have written two other posts about my visit to Chelsea on Tuesday, please feel free to add you own comments and thoughts on the show, I would love to know what you thought too.

I totally agree Zoe - it's my favourite too. I only wish it was going to my MIL's BUPA care home in Wakefield instesd.
Must see if the People's Award page is working now - they took it down yesterday as some of the garden's weren't working...
I've really enjoyed your series on the Chelsea flower show. I am yearning to see the show in person. The Bupa garden looks wonderful; it is interesting to see the detail and thought put in to make it accessible. I also liked the details in the 'green door' exhibit that you showed last post. The moss covered structures were so appealing that I wanted to touch them. Thanks also for the link to the vote.
I see what you mean, it's a lovely garden. I especially like the colour scheme with lupins, poppies, iris and salvias.
Zoe what utterly fabulous photograps and enlightening commentary as usual. I love your favourite garden. I need much longer than I have now to look at your chelsea posts so shall come back later for a proper read. Thanks for sharing all this with us - I didn't get to Chelsea!
That is an amaizing show! Thank you for sharing. If I eer visit the UK, I will have to time it for the Chelsea. vickie
Another vicarious visit to Chelsea - thank you for the great photographs and commentary. It's been good to see gardens as a visitor sees them - I thought that the TV footage showed too many close-up which didn't let you see the planting and landscaping in context.
Agree with you about the BUPA garden but also enjoyed Tom Stuart-Smith's and Diarmuid Gavin's signature planting.
And what wonderful hares!
Thanks Zoe and everyone for your kind comments.
At the award ceremony yesterday I forgot to thank everyone who voted for the Bupa Garden.
Heartfelt thanks. We're all chuffed.

I have tagged you on my blog, please feel free to play - or not
Warm regards
Karen
Know just what you mean about the majority of the Chelsea gardens - and can see why this one got your vote. I would be happy with this to look at and walk in and muse over. Hope it wins.
